“The Third Wish”
“The Third Wish” is a story of romance, grief, and three wishes. Will Mr. Peters use his wishes wisely, or will he waste them trying to fix what didn’t work out?
“The Third Wish” is a good example of romance because it qualifies in all of the sections to be a romance. The first qualification to be a romance is the world to be perfect. The world was perfect in the beginning of the story. The second qualification is there to be a small problem come up. In this story, the problem is Lieta being a swan and she misses her sister swan. The third qualification is the problem to be solved and the world to be perfect again. In this case, Mr. Peters turns Leita back into a swan and everything is perfect again. The second to last qualification is that it has to be un realistic. This story is unrealistic because swans can’t turn into humans and humans don’t turn into swans. The very last qualification is the story has to have a happy ending like all the fairy tails that end in “Happily Ever After”. This story ends happy because when Mr. Peters dies, he dies with a smile on his face.
Joan Aiken uses good symbolism in her story. The first symbolism is “The birds had stopped singing” on page 168. This symbolizes sadness and sets an eerie feeling in the story eerie feeling. The second good use of symbolism is also on page 168, “a spring evening”. This symbolizes birth and new life. Lastly, she symbolizes death by saying “died with a smile of happiness”. All of these put feeling in to words and make us feel like we are there in the story.
This author teaches us a very good lesson about life and decisions. One of the lessons that was taught in the story is to not mess with your life because it will most likely make it worse than it already is and make it confusing. Another lesson is to not to wish for things that you don’t have, especially things that you can really start to depend on a lot. Don’t do this because when and if you lose it, you might end up worse than you were before you got it. There for, if you ever get three wishes, take these lessons and make sure you don’t goof up big time.
“The Third Wish” is a good story to tell for a romantic story. It has a good moral to it and it really means something.
