The CN Tower, located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a communications and observation tower standing 1,815 ft tall. It surpassed the height of the Ostankino Tower while still under construction in 1975, becoming the tallest free-standing structure on land in the world for the next 31 years. On September 12, 2007 the CN Tower was surpassed in height by Burj Khalifa (formerly known as Burj Dubai). It remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere, the signature icon of Toronto's skyline, and a symbol of Canada, attracting more than two million visitors annually.
Guinness World Records has called the CN Tower "the world's tallest self-supporting tower" and "the world's tallest free-standing tower". Although Guinness did list this description of the CN Tower under the heading "tallest building" at least once, it has also listed it under "tallest tower", removing it from its list of "tallest buildings." In 1996, Guinness changed the tower's classification to "World's Tallest Building and Freestanding Structure". Emporis and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat both list the CN Tower as the world's tallest free-standing structure on land, and specifically state that the CN Tower is not a true building, thereby awarding the title of world's tallest building to Taipei 101, which is 144 ft shorter than the CN Tower. The tower's official web site, however, still claims it is the "world's tallest building".
Length of brink: 1060 feet
Height: 176 feet (due to rocks at the base, the actual fall is 70 feet)
Volume of water: 150,000 U.S. Gallons per second
The actual amount differs, there are two hydroelectric plants which take water into their
reservoirs before the Falls. Their intake greatly affects the volume of water flowing over
the falls. The amount of water being siphoned away depends on two variables. The time
of year, and the time of the day. Flow is greatest in the daytime during peak tourist
season (June, July, and August). In the event of an emergency the flow can be
somewhat reduced by the hydroelectric companies increasing their intake.
The Bridal Veil Falls is named for its appearance. It is located next to the American falls,
separated by a small piece of land called Luna Island.
TORONTO — A Toronto Transit Commission bus driver has been suspended after the driver was caught on camera visiting a doughnut shop mid-route.
Local 113 of the Amalgamated Transit Union confirmed the suspension in a release Thursday, saying only: "A TTC bus operator has been suspended pending an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a video purportedly recording the operator taking a seven-minute bathroom break and buying a coffee at a doughnut shop at 3:00 a.m. last Friday."
The video was posted on YouTube by TTC rider Reuven Politi, who said the delays in his nightly commute home on the northbound 310 Bathurst Blue Night bus have become a routine.
"I have been taking this bus every weeknight for the last two weeks, and every time, it's the same ceremony," Politi told the National Post.
Brad Ross, head of corporate communications for the TTC, refused to comment on the matter, saying only: "We don't comment on discipline."
The video of the bus driver comes a week after the TTC chair Adam Giambrone went into full damage control mode, hosting a press conference at City Hall to apologize for the transit system's lackluster performance as of late.
A recent fare increase, token shortage, and several photos of TTC employees sleeping on the job unleashed a barrage of unrelenting criticism from riders.
