“Papa’s Parrot”
Imagine avoiding your dad just because it wasn’t the thing to go to your dads candy and nut store anymore. You hung out at home, but you didn’t go to his shop anymore with your friends after school. Since he misses the company, he buys a parrot to talk to and to keep him company. How would you feel if you did this, would you be sad, regret it, or would you even care? This is what this super story, “Papa’s Parrot” by Cynthia Rylant is about, a boy who starts to break apart his relationship with his dad.
First of all, this story is a comedy because it has all the requirements of a comedy. The first requirement is the story to start in normalcy.“Papa’s Parrot” starts as a normalcy because there is nothing unusual about a guy selling candy and nuts in a shop and having a kid that stops by everyday after school. The second thing that has to happen is a conflict to come up. This happens when Harry’s dad becomes ill and has to be taken to the hospital. Harry is the main character in this story. Harry then realizes this issue, which is the third requirement of a comedy story. Harry realizes the problem when he is cleaning is fathers shop and his parrot started squawking, “Where’s Harry, Where’s Harry?” and “Miss him, miss him.” Parrots only learn word when they continuously hear them, and Harry thinks that the parrot is saying this because his father says when he doesn’t stop in after school. To resolve this problem, Harry goes to the hospital to visit his papa, and this is when things get back to normal.
Even though I’m a little like Harry, sometimes abandoning friendships for awhile, then coming back as good friends again, I am more like Papa in this story. I am more like Papa because I sometimes get lonely and need someone or something to keep me company. Even if I don’t own a candy and nut shop sadly, I am like Harry’s Papa. And I have leaned a good lesson from it.
There is a good lesson to be learned from this story, and you don’t have to look to hard to find it. The lesson is to not abandon friends, or especially family members because it can hurt them physically and emotionally. Not only is it not nice, it can hurt you because if you need them all of a sudden, they may not help you because you left them. And it might be important to have friends in important businesses because if you want to apply for a job for that company, it might help to know somebody there. It’s is just overall good to have a lot of friends, it could even be fun sometimes.
As you can see, “Papa’s Parrot” is a good story and has a good meaning. Even though Harry started to break apart his relationship with his father, his father getting sick may bring them back together and start to appreciate each other more. When ever you might start to think about how you haven’t seen one of your friends in a while, of you feel that you aren’t as good of friends with somebody than you were, think of this story and figure something out.
